I like the subtitle - "what goes in its place" - but at first I was struggling to relate to your "block of clay into a mug" - then I realized this is what I do with words - 26 letters arranged and rearranged until the make sense and connect me with other people. Fun!! Yes, I needed something other than inebriation to satisfy those neurons - I've had many years to arrive at the mental mix - but it requires work - much more complicated than numbing, but also infinitely more rewarding.

Work indeed Jerry! Is writing what you pivoted to when drinking wasn’t filling that space?

Long story, Josh. In fact, "what goes in its place" could be the subject of both my memoirs. I've been on a journey to learn "what goes in its place" since I stopped in 1971. Writing turned out to be a huge part of it. But soothng the edges once my mind starts spinning has required a lifetime of bobbing and weaving through all the good valluable things in life - service, friendship, creativity, spirituality, a longing for peace, the list goes on.
